Built for Airdrie's hail and wind

Two big hailstorms in six years, and chinook wind in between. Roofing for Airdrie.

Airdrie has been named in two of Alberta's costliest hailstorms, in 2014 and 2020. Between storms it gets the open-prairie wind and the warm chinook spells of the Calgary region, then months of snow. Here is how an Interlock® aluminum roof answers each, and the limits we put in writing.

June 2020

The storm that named Airdrie

Insurance Bureau of Canada put the June 13, 2020 hailstorm over Calgary, Airdrie, Rocky View County and the surrounding area at almost $1.2 billion in insured damage, the fourth most expensive insured natural disaster in Canadian history at the time. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Large hail can still dent metal, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).

August 2014

Six years earlier, the same story

The hailstorm of August 7, 2014 hit Airdrie and the country around it, and Insurance Bureau of Canada estimated about $450 million in insured damage. An aluminum roof is chosen so the next storm is less likely to mean another new roof; it does not make a house immune to hail, and storm damage is still a matter for your home insurance.

Chinooks

Thaw on Tuesday, freeze on Wednesday

A winter chinook can put Airdrie above freezing for an afternoon, and the cold usually returns within a day or two. Meltwater refreezes on the roof each time, which loosens asphalt granules and lifts shingle tabs in the next gust. Interlock panels lock to one another on all four sides with the fasteners hidden, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Snow

Where the snow lands

A smooth aluminum roof sheds snow in slabs rather than holding it, so we mark snow guards on the quote over front steps, decks, garage doors and the side yard path. Ice dams are a different matter: they start with heat leaking into the attic. The material warranty excludes ice damming, so we check insulation and ventilation with you rather than claim the roof will prevent them.

Permits

Re-roofing in the City of Airdrie

The City of Airdrie lists re-roofing as work that typically needs no building permit, provided there are no structural changes to the building and health or safety are not at risk. If the inspection finds decking or framing that needs rebuilding, that can change. In Balzac, Irricana and the rest of Rocky View County the County or the Town sets the rules, and we confirm them for your address first.

Source: City of Airdrie, why permits are required ↗

Solar

Panels on the roof later?

The City's Solar PV Guidelines describe the electrical permit a solar installation needs, and require a building permit and inspection when the roof has to be reinforced to carry the array. If solar is in your plans, tell us at the consultation so the roof and the mounting are planned together.

Why Airdrie homeowners choose aluminum

One more Airdrie roof, then no more re-roofing.

Installer

The people who quote it install it

Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. sends its own crews to every Airdrie roof. Nobody subcontracts the work to a company you have not met, and the same company handles any service call afterwards.

Slate

What Airdrie has picked

Slate is the profile Airdrie homeowners have chosen most in our job book. Shake and Cedar Shingle give a wood look, Mediterranean Tile a tile look, and Standing Seam a modern one, each in nine colours. All of them need a roof slope of at least 3/12, which we measure at the visit.

Weight

Light on the trusses

Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre. That is a fraction of concrete tile. We still check the trusses and decking at the inspection, and anything that needs fixing goes into the quote.

Tear-off

What comes off first

Cedar shakes and shingles, concrete tile and natural slate are always removed. One layer of asphalt can sometimes stay under the new roof, but only if the inspection finds it suitable; two layers come off. The quote says which applies to your house.

Warranties

Material and labour, both in writing

Interlock Roofing's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty covers the aluminum and its finish while the original purchaser owns the home, and can be transferred once; it excludes workmanship. Our own 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty covers the installation.

Airdrie roofing questions, with straight answers.

All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofs in Airdrie?

We do. Interlock Metal Roofing (Alberta) Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Alberta, founded in 1999, and our own crews install every Airdrie roof from our office in Calgary. There is no Airdrie office: the consultation is on Zoom or at your home. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, and a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award winner.

Do I need a permit to replace my roof in Airdrie?

Usually not. The City of Airdrie lists re-roofing among the work that typically doesn't need a permit, as long as there are no structural changes and health or safety are not at risk. Rebuilt decking or framing, or a solar array that needs the roof reinforced, can change that. Balzac and the country around it are in Rocky View County, and Irricana is its own town, so different offices apply there. We confirm the rules for your address before work starts.

Will an aluminum roof stand up to Airdrie hail?

It is built for it, but no roof is immune to hail. Airdrie was named in the August 2014 hailstorm, about $450 million insured, and the June 13, 2020 storm, almost $1.2 billion, both per Insurance Bureau of Canada. Interlock's Slate, Shake, Cedar Shingle and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products. Very large hail can dent metal, and the material warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in), so storm damage goes to your home insurance. Ask your insurer how they treat an impact-rated roof; we can provide the listing.

Which communities does airdrieroofing.com cover?

Airdrie, the hamlet of Balzac, the Town of Irricana and the surrounding part of Rocky View County. For Calgary itself and everywhere else in Southern Alberta, see calgarymetalroofing.com: it is our company too, with the same office, crews and warranties.

How long does an Airdrie roof replacement take?

It depends on the size of the roof, the tear-off and the weather, so we give you the expected schedule in writing when you sign rather than a number here.

What does a metal roof cost in Airdrie?

Our cost page shows real contract prices from Interlock® roofs signed in the Calgary and Southern Alberta market in 2025 and 2026. Treat them as a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for an accurate price. The consultation and the written quote are free.
